There was a time when wealth breathed. Before the world was digitized into a series of flickering numbers on a screen, “value” was something you could touch, smell, and see growing in a field. Today, we live in an era of fiat currency and abstract debt—a system that has not only changed our economy but has profoundly altered our psychological and spiritual connection to the Creator.
The Reality of Natural Resources: Wealth as a Blessing:
In the pre-modern world, transactions were anchored in the physical reality of Allah’s (SWT) creation. Whether it was the exchange of cattle, the weighing of gold, or the trading of dates and grain, “money” was synonymous with life and livelihood.
➡️ Intrinsic Value: A goat was valuable because it provided milk, wool, and meat. Gold was valuable because of its unique physical properties. These were not “made up” values; they were inherent.
➡️ A Constant Reminder: When a merchant traded in grain or livestock, they were constantly reminded of their dependence on the natural world. They saw the rain that grew the crops and the health of the animals as direct gifts from the Provider (Ar-Razzaq).
➡️ The Weight of Truth: There is a grounding effect when wealth is physical. It prevents the ego from drifting into the fantasy of infinite growth, reminding us that we are stewards of the earth’s finite resources.
The Psychological Shift: From Experience to Calculation 🧮
As we moved toward “fake money”—currency backed by nothing but a promise from a central authority—the human psyche underwent a massive shift.
We stopped looking at our blessings and started counting our digits.
When wealth becomes a number on an app, it loses its “soul.” This abstraction leads to a state of constant calculation. Psychologically, this creates a scarcity mindset.
In the past, if your barn was full, you felt secure. Today, even with a high bank balance, the fear of inflation, market crashes, or systemic failure keeps the mind in a state of perpetual “what if?”
“We have traded the peace of tangible provision for the anxiety of a floating decimal point.”
The Spiritual Crisis: The Erosion of Tawakkul:
The most significant casualty of this shift is Tawakkul (complete trust in Allah). When the value system is rooted in natural resources, the link between the effort of the human and the blessing of Allah (SWT) is clear.
✅ Reliance on the System vs. the Creator: Modern money demands that we trust “the system.” We trust the bank, the government, and the global economy. When we place our ultimate security in these man-made structures, our reliance on Allah (SWT) naturally weakens.
✅ The State of Doubt: Because fiat money is essentially “imaginary,” it breeds an underlying sense of doubt. We are never quite sure if what we have today will be worth anything tomorrow. This doubt is the antithesis of the certainty (Yaqeen) required for spiritual peace.
✅ The Misery of “More”: Since numbers are infinite, the pursuit of them becomes a bottomless pit. Unlike a farmer who knows when his silo is full, the modern “counter” of money is never satisfied. This “counting” culture creates the misery of never feeling “enough.”
Reclaiming Grounding in a Virtual World 🏳️
The misery of the modern human often stems from this disconnect. We are disconnected from the source of our food, the reality of our labor, and ultimately, the reality of Tawakkul.
While we cannot easily dismantle the global financial system overnight, we can change our internal orientation. By recognizing that our true provision comes from Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala—not from a credit score or a paycheck—we can begin to alleviate the anxiety of the “fake money” era.
True wealth is not what is reflected in a digital ledger; it is the barakah (blessing) in what we have, the health of our bodies, and the peace of a heart that knows its Provider is the Lord of the Worlds. By looking past the numbers and back at the natural blessings surrounding us, we can find the grounding we so desperately crave.
